The bottom line

Beneva is Canada’s largest insurance mutual and a full-line player especially strong in Quebec and group benefits, carrying AM Best A (Excellent). Its shelf spans term, whole life, universal life, critical illness, group and investments under one roof — a solid all-rounder rather than a specialist. As a young combined brand (2020–23 merger of La Capitale and SSQ), it’s advisor-centric with weaker direct/digital and less recognition outside Quebec.

How to buy Beneva life insurance

Advisor and broker only — Beneva does not sell individual life directly to consumers and does not offer online quotes. Its site captures your details and routes you to an advisor, or you call 1-866-612-3473. Independent brokers also carry it. Simplified and guaranteed-issue products can be issued in about 60 minutes; fully underwritten cases typically take one to two weeks. Beneva's own French term page warns the product may not be offered in your province.

Beneva life insurance plans

Term Plus (term life)

Term lengths of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 40 years per Beneva, with brokers also listing 35. Premiums are level for the initial term and renewal rates are guaranteed and disclosed in advance. Convertible to permanent or universal life with no evidence of insurability. Level or decreasing benefit. Brokers report a $10 million maximum and renewal to age 85.

Best for Buyers wanting a very long level term — 40 years is longer than most Canadian carriers write.

Not for Anyone who wants to compare a real quote before speaking to an advisor, since no rates are published.

Term-extension and exchange privilege

Beneva allows switching to a longer term before the policy reaches its five-year mark with no medical exam required, and conversion to permanent coverage without evidence of insurability. These are contractual flexibility features rather than separate products.

Best for Younger buyers who expect their coverage horizon to lengthen as they take on a mortgage or children.

Not for Buyers past the five-year window, when the term-extension option is no longer available.

Permanent life insurance

Lifetime coverage with fixed premiums, payable over a set number of years or for life, with the possibility of withdrawing cash value. Brokers list named plans including Whole Life 20, Whole Life 100 and Term 100. Beneva itself publishes no coverage limits, issue ages or premium detail on its permanent page.

Best for Buyers who want a guaranteed lifetime benefit from a large mutual and are working with an advisor anyway.

Not for Self-directed shoppers — there is effectively no public specification to evaluate.

Universal life insurance

Permanent coverage combined with a tax-sheltered savings component and adjustable coverage. Riders mirror the term and permanent lines. Brokers report yearly-renewable-term cost options for ages 0-85 and level cost to 100 for ages 0-80, with coverage from $25,000 to $10 million.

Best for Advisor-guided buyers wanting tax-sheltered accumulation inside a policy from a mutual insurer.

Not for Anyone comparing fund lineups or fees before committing — Beneva publishes neither.

Simplified and guaranteed-issue life

Three variants: simplified term, simplified permanent, and guaranteed-issue permanent. No medical exam; a few health questions for the simplified versions and none for guaranteed issue. Beneva advertises being covered in 60 minutes, subject to conditions. Broker-reported caps range from $10,000-$50,000 for guaranteed issue up to $500,000 for simplified term.

Best for Applicants in poor health, or anyone who needs coverage bound the same day.

Not for Healthy applicants, who will pay materially more than a fully underwritten policy costs.

What Beneva life insurance costs

Beneva publishes no rates at all — its own pages carry no premiums, and HelloSafe explicitly states Beneva's premium rates are not publicly available. What broker data exists suggests Beneva prices close to the Canadian market average, with PolicyMe's benchmarking placing it within roughly 1-2% of average across most age bands. Only the PolicyAdvisor table below carries a date; the others are undated and should not be treated as current 2026 pricing.

Premiums are the figures published or quoted at the sources above as at September 2026. Insurance is priced individually — treat these as a realistic benchmark, not a quote.

What Beneva life insurance customers say

There is no score to give. InsurEye's Beneva life insurance page contains exactly one review, posted in August 2024, rating the company one star over an advisor who was dismissive about a cancellation request. One review is not a rating, and any site presenting a Beneva life-insurance star score is either aggregating other product lines or inventing it.

Beneva has only existed under this name since late 2020, so it has had little time to accumulate a review footprint, and it sells individual life exclusively through advisors and brokers — meaning the buying experience customers rate is usually the intermediary's, not Beneva's. The review volume that does exist is dominated by auto, home and group benefits. Its mobile app is the one large verified dataset at 4.4 stars from around 31,000 ratings, but that measures claims and benefits administration across all lines, not life insurance.

What works
  • Fast claim reimbursement. App Store reviewers describe benefit claims being reimbursed within about 48 hours, though these are group benefits rather than life claims.
  • Clear coverage explanations in-app. Several reviewers say the app makes it easy to see what a policy actually covers without calling anyone.
  • Market-rate pricing. PolicyMe's quote benchmarking places Beneva within roughly 1-2% of the Canadian market average across most age bands.
  • Financial solidity. AM Best rates the life carrier A (Excellent), and Beneva reports a solvency ratio of 163% against consolidated assets near $29 billion.
What doesn’t
  • Dismissive advisor handling. The single life-specific review says the company is 'not consistent in their explanations' and that the advisor was nonchalant when the customer asked to cancel.
  • Phone support hard to reach. Long hold times are a recurring theme, and Beneva itself acknowledges high call volumes and longer response times.
  • Unstable mobile app. Reviewers report constant crashes, dead links and documents that never download — one wrote that the app 'bogue tout le temps'.
  • No self-serve purchase path. Beneva offers no online quotes or applications for individual life, which several analysts flag alongside longer policy-approval turnaround.

Beneva: frequently asked questions

Can Beneva be trusted to pay out a claim?

On the evidence, yes: Beneva holds an A (Excellent), ICR a financial-strength rating from AM Best (2022) — an independent agency’s verdict on its ability to pay claims. Formed 2020–23 from La Capitale + SSQ; member-owned mutual.

Who is Beneva life insurance a good fit for?

Beneva stands out for a full-service mutual, especially in Quebec. Largest Canadian mutual, AM Best A, and very broad shelf — term, whole, universal, CI, group. If those things matter most to you, it’s worth a close look; if your priority is something else, compare it against the companies that rate highest on that pillar.

What are the downsides of Beneva life insurance?

The watch-outs we found: advisor-centric, weaker direct/digital; less recognition outside Quebec. We spell these out so you can weigh them before buying — every insurer has trade-offs, and knowing them upfront is the point of a real review.

How does Beneva compare to other life insurance companies in Canada?

Beneva ranks #8 of the 10 life insurance providers we scored, at 80.4/100. It’s strongest on financial strength and has the most room to improve on digital experience.

Who is Beneva, and what happened to La Capitale and SSQ Insurance?

Beneva is the merged company. La Capitale and SSQ Insurance combined on 3 July 2020 to create what Beneva describes as the largest mutual insurance company in Canada, and the Beneva brand went to market later that year. At the merger the combined group had roughly 4,700 employees, more than 3.5 million members and clients, and over $20 billion in assets under management. It has grown since, reporting consolidated assets of about $29.2 billion at the end of 2025 and around 3.8 million members. Head office is in Quebec City. If you held a La Capitale or SSQ policy, it is now a Beneva policy — the contract terms did not change with the rebrand.

Can I get a Beneva life insurance quote online?

No. Beneva does not publish rates and does not offer online quotes or applications for individual life insurance. Its website has a 'Get a quote' form, but that is lead capture — it routes your details to an advisor who then contacts you. You can also call 1-866-612-3473 directly, or go through an independent broker who carries Beneva. This is worth planning around: because no rates are public, you cannot sanity-check a Beneva quote against its own published pricing, so get quotes from at least two other carriers through a broker before deciding.

How fast can Beneva actually issue a policy?

It depends heavily on which product you apply for. Beneva advertises its simplified and guaranteed-issue products as 'covered in 60 minutes', with the caveat that conditions apply and that existing Beneva clients adding coverage may wait longer. Fully underwritten policies are a different matter — brokers report typical issue in one to two weeks where a straightforward exam is involved, and at least one analyst lists longer-than-average approval turnaround as a Beneva drawback. Brokers also report no medical exam is required for coverage under $500,000 for applicants aged 18 to 45, which removes the main source of delay.

Is Beneva life insurance sold in every province?

Not necessarily, and Beneva says so itself. Its French-language term life page carries an explicit warning that the product may not be offered in your province or territory of residence. Beneva presents as a national insurer and brokers describe it as operating across Canada, but we could not find an authoritative province-by-province list for its individual life products, and its mutual roots and property-casualty business are heavily Quebec-weighted. Before you invest time in an application, confirm availability for your specific province with the advisor — and be aware that a broker's own licensing footprint is a separate limitation from Beneva's product availability.

Why are there almost no reviews of Beneva life insurance?

Three reasons compound. The brand is only about five years old, so there has been little time to accumulate feedback. Individual life is sold entirely through advisors and brokers, so customers who do review tend to review the intermediary rather than Beneva. And life insurance generates far fewer service touchpoints than auto or home cover, where most Beneva reviews come from. The practical consequence: InsurEye's Beneva life page holds exactly one review. Treat any site showing you a Beneva life-insurance star rating with suspicion — it is almost certainly aggregating auto, home or group benefits, or reproducing its own site-wide widget.
